The Battle of Boost: Procharger vs. Screw Blower

If you’ve been following No Prep Kings this season, you know the Procharger and Screw Blower combos are two of the most talked-about setups in the series. Each has its strengths and weaknesses, and the question everyone’s asking is: which one has the upper hand?

Procharger Combos:

Procharger setups have been a dominant force this season. With a clear advantage in terms of adaptability to no-prep surfaces, Prochargers have won 8 out of the 11 races so far. This success is partly due to the Procharger’s ability to adjust more easily to less-than-ideal track conditions. They produce about 13-14 lbs of boost at the starting line, which, while less than the Screw Blower’s initial output, allows for more consistent application of power on tricky surfaces.

Screw Blower Combos:

On the flip side, Screw Blower combinations, like those used by Jim Hal, Justin Swanstrom, and Ryan Martin with the Fireball Camaro, have made their mark, clinching 3 wins this season. Screw Blowers deliver significantly more boost off the line—around 40 lbs—but this power can be hard to manage on sketchy tracks. Their larger boost numbers can be a double-edged sword: while they offer immense power, they struggle to put it all down effectively on tracks that aren’t prepped.

Track Conditions and Their Impact

The key difference this season has been the track surfaces. No Prep Kings tracks are notoriously unpredictable and less forgiving compared to the prepped surfaces seen in other racing series. On prepped tracks like those used in the PDRA events, Screw Blowers might have an edge due to their higher boost capabilities. However, NPK’s rougher surfaces seem to favor the more tunable Procharger setups.

Ryan Martin’s experience with the Fireball Camaro underscores this point. While his Camaro was faster on a prepped track, the current no-prep conditions have shown that the Procharger setup is better suited to handle the uneven surfaces and varying track conditions encountered in NPK.

The Numbers Game

Despite their raw power, Screw Blowers are facing a challenge on NPK tracks. Their inability to efficiently apply all their power on less-than-ideal surfaces means Prochargers often have the advantage. This season, the Procharger combos have proven more adaptable, which is why we’re seeing them at the top of the standings.

However, it’s worth noting that consistency remains a strong suit for Screw Blower setups. Cars like Kai Kelly’s have shown impressive performance in the past, and their potential on better tracks—like those upcoming in Las Vegas, Michigan, and Texas Motorplex—could shift the balance.

What Lies Ahead

As the season progresses, we’ll be keeping a close eye on how the remaining races play out. With tracks like Las Vegas and Michigan on the horizon, it’ll be interesting to see if the Screw Blowers can leverage their raw power on more favorable surfaces. Conversely, the Procharger setups will need to maintain their edge on no-prep surfaces to keep their lead.

In conclusion, while Prochargers currently hold the upper hand in the No Prep Kings arena due to their adaptability to unpredictable surfaces, the Screw Blowers still have a chance to shine on better-prepped tracks. The battle is far from over, and as always, we’re excited to see how these fierce competitors continue to push the limits of drag racing.
