Recently, Kye Kelly shared some intriguing details in his latest YouTube video about a new weight break for screw-blown combinations in NPK. According to Kye, if you run your screw blower setup at 82% overdrive, you get to shed 90 pounds off your car's weight. This is a significant change that could shake up the competition.
In the middle of the season, there was another weight break introduced. If you run at 92% overdrive, you can take 40 pounds off. Alternatively, you can stick to the 98% overdrive at the base weight, which has been the standard. The base weight for these setups is 2825 pounds. Most racers don't run lockups, which deducts an additional 50 pounds, bringing it down to 2775 pounds. With the reduced overdrive at 82%, the weight goes down to approximately 2685 pounds. Additionally, if you have a pre-1979 built car, you can drop another 25 pounds, hitting a remarkably low 2660 pounds.
Not many cars can reach that weight, especially with a screw-blown setup. But 2660 pounds is impressively light for an NPK car with a screw blower. The difference between running at 98% and 82% overdrive can be quite significant, potentially reducing boost by 3 to 4 pounds. For a screw-blown setup, this reduction translates to a substantial drop in power—likely around 200 to 300 horsepower. However, the 90-pound weight reduction could offset this power loss, making the cars highly competitive.

We’ve seen how weight reduction impacts performance firsthand. Last season, a 100-pound reduction significantly improved the performance of procharger combinations, even though the 136 procharger doesn’t make as much power as the 140 S1. This new weight break could have a similar impact on screw-blown setups.
Even with a significant reduction in overdrive, screw blowers still generate impressive power. Back in 2022, NHRA allowed screw blowers to run at 75% overdrive in Pro Mod, and Stevie Fast went 5.70 at 257 mph in the quarter mile and 3.77 at 211 mph in the eighth mile. That was with a restricted NHRA setup, not an unlimited Outlaw engine combo like in NPK. An outlaw combo at 82% overdrive will undoubtedly make even more power.
Kye Kelly's new car, purpose-built for this type of racing, could be light enough to benefit significantly from this new rule. If he can get down to the target weight of 2685 pounds, we could see some incredibly fast runs, even with the reduced overdrive.
